History
It's been suggested that we might somehow produce a sticker and send it to all the pubs listed in the cider pub guide.
original idea
- Maybe a first step would be to open a subscribers' fund for ukcider
- campaigning and promotional activities. One idea: I noticed the other
- day that our local (the Rose & Crown, Charlbury, Oxfordshire) now has a
- "Good Cider Guide - we are in it!" sticker on the door. Why don't we
- produce a batch of these for ukcider.co.uk and post them out to the
- pubs listed in the wiki? RF
Benefits
A cool way to promote both cider and the wiki! Scores of people would see the sticker, compared to the occasional one or two current ukcider readers who pass through the door of any wiki- listed pub. Instant order-of-magnitude increase in real visibility. DD
obstacles
Not so many folks know about wikis so far, but having them ask "What's a wiki?!?" is just another draw.
I'm trying to put myself in the place of a landlord/lady who receives a sticker in the post - to work out why they would, or, more exactly, why they would not, put our sticker up in their window.
Initially, we risk being dropped straight into the bin - taken as just another bit of junk mail or promotional material. I'm sure they get enough targetted advertising already. So in all cases I think it is far better for these stickers to be given personally, ideally where the giver is already known by the landlord/lady, improving the success rate.
Secondly, and in my mind, most importantly, we have to get past the question "What's in it for me ?" or "Why should I?"
Now, I think that we have answers for those questions - namely that they're getting free advertising (basically) for selling cider. Any comparison with the GBG stickers would probably help here. TO
design
The sticker should obviously have a bit of boast about the pub being listed and carrying good cider, along with the ukcider wiki URL, and to be identifiable, seems it should have the ukcider color logo as a background.
URL
The URL on a sticker might direct people to a page thanking them for looking up ukcider, telling them more of what the sticker means, urging them to seek out pubs which display the sticker and ask for cider, etc., and then leading them to the wiki.
Getting people to remember longer URLs and type them in correctly is a bit of a problem, but as long as the sticker has "ukcider.co.uk" on it they should find their way. AR
Cost
JH (01/02/08)- To give a rough idea of the costs of producing both/either stickers or posters, I have had my usual printer quote for the work. It may well not be the cheapest for this type of job:
Window Stickers A5 size. Full colour 1 side
500 - £487.00
1000 - £889.50
A5 posters full colour 1 side on 100gsm paper
500 - £ 70.00
1000 - £130.00
A publicans view
I think I prefer A as a poster and B as a sticker. We would display a poster, but would be a bit reluctant with a window sticker, particularly at A5. We can barely see out as it is. ( Our pub, the Retreat, is CAMRA's Cider pub of the year for the south east, but we are not in the Camra cider guide.)
