Barngates

  • The Drunken Duck - this famous pub (home of Barngates brewery) now has Thatcher's Cheddar Valley cider on draught. Popular pub with restaurant (booking advised, it gets busy). Real fire and range of its own excellent real ales, as well as good quality bar food. Paul Gunningham, January 2007

Update 30/05/2009 - only cider available now is Aspalls Suffolk Cyder, dispensed from a tall pressure font, though seemingly at low pressure.

Boot

Cumbria, CA19 1TH phone 019467 23230

Real ale brewpub , also sells Solway Cider DOG Rough Set in beautiful countryside, ideal for camping / climbing / exploring. Close to the terminus of the Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow-gauge railway. Pub policy demands that everything sold is as "natural" as possible, and avoids the sale of any nationally advertised products. All beers and ciders are locally produced. Google Map

Carlisle

  • Woodrow Wilson, 48 Botchergate, Carlisle CA1 1QS (01228 819942)

Dalton in Furness

  • Black Dog Inn Broughton Road, Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria. Phone: 01229 462561

According to the local Lindal & Marton village website there are four to six real ales available, plus real ciders on tap from the cellar.

Foxfield

Roadside real ale pub, home of the Foxfield Brewery with four or five real ales from small brewerys. Always has real cider, either in polypin or plastic keg. Todays choice of two was "Crones Organic", and "Dyken Cider Pure Crab", the latter was made a few hundred yards from the pub in a small-scale operation using 100% crab apples. Apparently its founded by a a grant from "CAPRA" - some kind of apple and pear research group. Note pub is closed Monday/Tuesday (the Good Beer Guide has got it wrong). Best public transport is by train from Barrow: the pub is directly opposite Foxfield station. Google Map Holds an annual cider in July

Update 1/10/2009 Todays choice was Thatchers Dry & Westons Perry. They have in recent months been selling their own home-brewed cider (The Foxfield Brewery is located at the pub) and the last of the locally produced Dyken. It seems Dyken now wont be available for a while as the 2008 fermentation went wrong and was abandoned

Grasmere

Westons cider / perry

Great Langdale

  • Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel. A basic walker's bar on the side of this renowned hotel in a stunning setting, selling Old Rosie as well as a wide range of real ales and whiskies. The Cumberland sausage is recommended too! Camping at the Popular National Trust site across the road. Justin Petty

Orton

Pleasant inn in little village where, according to the bar staff, they often have "a barrel of cider" behind the bar (though sadly not on our visit). Lovely hot beef roll though!

Staveley

Friendly GBG-listed pub has three draught ciders from the Weston's range, including Old Rosie and Organic Vintage. As you might expect, it has an interesting range of real ales too, does good food, has accommodation, a real fire, and there's an idyllic riverside beer (or cider!) garden. Surprised no-one's mentioned this before. Paul Gunningham

Weston's Old Rosie and First Quality on sale, 4 Jan 2007 Paul Gunningham

also has regular beer festivals featuring cumbrian cider

Quick lunchtime visit 1/3/2010 showed no indication of real cider. No time to ask the barlady for confirmation, but it looks like the cider has gone. Needs another visit to check! Its a nice pub, the rest of Paul's comments are as valid as before - JonS

Wasdale Head

  • Wasdale Head Inn Home of the Great Gable Brewery (real ale) " Solway Cider - DOG Rough" when available ,

Whitehaven

  • Bransty Arch, Bransty Arch Row, Whitehaven, Cumbria CA28 7XE

Not half bad Wetherspoon with the usual range. Situated in a converted bus station (close to the railway station and waterfront).

Windermere

  • Booths Supermarket usually stock Dunkerton's in bottles, as well a selection of other bottled real ciders and perry. [Addition 2/4/6: Includes what seems like the full Sheppy's range, plus a lot of others too numerous to remember, let alone mention! If they can do it, why can't the big chains?! - Paul Gunningham]

Delisted Pubs

DELISTED The Black Bull at Coniston had a pump sign saying "Real Cider" which was "Ruby Tuesday" on 24/10/06. This turned out to be an offering from Saxon Cider which tasted of ribena and nothing much else. The pub is also the home of the Coniston Brewery which makes the award winning Bluebird bitter and is in a beautiful location.

  • Ship Inn Greenod Locals pub near Ulverston selling local Ales and Solway Cider when available or other ciders from down south .

24/10/2009 - no sign of any draught real cider. Just Magners and Strongbow on keg. Did have a few Aspall's bottles in the fridge,

  • Kirkstile Inn Loweswater

home of the Loweswater brewery , range of cumbrian beers & Solway cider , no longer selling cider due to bar space ! landlord wanted greater beer range , so cider went.
