Addlestones Cider plus ale & cider festivals throughout the year
Thought to have been built by Lord Boringdon (brother of Lord Morley, also one of the Parkers of Saltram) in the early eighteenth century as a Quarry master’s house. The ‘Bori’ was certainly a pub in 1771, as records show that the building was bought as an Ale House. In 1808 Langmaid’s Brewery leased the Bori from Lord Boringdon and the first known licensee was Isaac Pears in 1826. In the early 1970s the Bori was a Plymouth Brewery pub, they were taken over by Courage who altered the Bori, closed the Shipwright’s Inn (just down the terrace) and sold the Bori in the early 1980s. Since the 1990s the Bori has become recognised as a traditional pub, serving home cooked meals and a vast choice of beers. Proving popular to visitors, locals and real ale devotees alike, Plymouth CAMRA awarded the Bori SW Region Pub of the Year in 2002.

Barnstaple

Very conveniently situated close to A361 North Devon Link road. Tauntons on draught and Westons from polypins. Food looked good. Behind this pub is a community mazzard green (orchard). Mazzards are a Devon cherry and used to be a significant local industry. This green was a Y2K project of local people and orchard enthusiasts and was planted by local schoolchildren. Probably worth trying the Ring O Bells pub also.

Friendly city centre bar (almost opposite the JDW), a regular GBG entry and one of the Barnstaple entries on the Tarka Line Rail Ale Trail. "Sams" available if you ask, but if you only ask for "cider" you'll probably be served Inch's Stonehouse keg! Good cheap food. Live music Sunday afternoon (Easter 2009). Open 11-11.

Croyde
- Brook Stores - 1 St. Mary’s Road, EX33 1LF (01271 890120)
Perhaps the only source of real Devon cider in the area. Shop/bakery located next to Post Office by Croyde bridge. Hancock’s dry and Medium “Devon Farm Scrumpy Cider” sold in polythene containers; plus Ostler's (very) Traditional Scrumpy 6% at Easter 2009. Also a wide range of Palmerhayes products, including some in fancy glassware memento containers. Apparently it is the Hancock’s that sells out more rapidly!
Ilfracombe
- The Old Cider Apple Bicclescombe Park Ro, Ilfracombe, Devon, EX348EU
Do they serve anything made from cider apples? Does it even exist now? I went up and down the road without spotting a sign. If there is no response to phone call, assume it's defunct. That pretty much describes the town as far as cider is concerned. The Tourist Info folk suggested I come back for the beer festival in August if I want some real/local cider!

Oh! and a range of country wines popular with a surprisingly young crowd at the weekend (who tend to disappear when the evening bus departs for Torquay!).
